2022 INSIGHTS

From the Health Fund Leadership

At the Michigan Health Endowment Fund, we’re always learning. Every day, we hear how our grantees are empowering Michiganders to lead healthier lives, improving access to high-quality care, and moving us closer to a “whole person” model of health. These lessons help us understand our impact, refine our program strategies, and become more effective in pursuit of our mission.

2022 was heavy on research, data, and listening—we learned a lot! We believe that the resulting insights are useful not only to us but also to nonprofits, agencies, providers, and other people who work toward a healthier Michigan.

In this report, we share some of those insights and explain how we’re acting on them.

Scroll to explore things like:

  • How feedback from grantees is helping us improve our processes, from streamlining applications to easing funding restrictions.

  • What we learned from our updated Behavioral Health Access Study, including valuable pre-pandemic baseline data and a first-time look at access for groups like pregnant women and children in the foster care system.

  • How telehealth improvements made during the early days of COVID-19 can outlast the health emergency and lead to better care overall.

  • What our Children’s Health Forum revealed about food security, social determinants of health, and community-driven solutions.

We are immensely grateful to our grantees and other allies who help us better understand the challenges we face and how we can solve them together. Community members, leaders, researchers, evaluators, facilitators, and subject matter experts have all shared their skills to generate the knowledge highlighted in this report. And as always, we’re grateful to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan for their financial support, which has allowed us to award more than $261 million in grants since 2014.

INSIGHTS INTO

ACCESS

Behavioral Health Access Study

In 2022, we updated the Behavioral Health Access Study to understand where Michigan has made progress, where ongoing challenges persist, and where new challenges have arisen. Using data from 2019, the updated study provides an important baseline of pre-pandemic access. It also dives deeper into specific groups, such as pregnant women and children in the foster care system.
